How to Clear Packing Supplies After a Move Before They Become Storage Clutter
After a move, boxes, tape, paper, and unused packing material can become the first long-term pile in the new home. Start with the supplies needed for a confirmed short-term task: returns, a planned handoff, or the final unpacking group. Give all other packing materials a clear exit date.
Flatten clean, dry boxes only when a local recipient, mover, neighbour, or recycling program accepts them. Keep a small reusable limit for a defined next use, not a room full of possible future boxes. Check current receiving rules before loading a car or leaving material outside.
Separate materials that need special handling: damaged batteries, chemicals, sharp packing tools, wet or mold-affected materials, and items with personal information. Do not put these into ordinary boxes or assume they belong in normal recycling.
Finish one category: remove labels that expose private details where appropriate, set a return date for reusable supplies, and move accepted material out. The goal is a usable new room, not a perfectly empty garage.
